While away in Toronto Canada seeing family, I made a point of visiting as many new galleries and artist i could find. My son had arranged for me to go to an opening of Russian artist Elena Mildner ‘Live Drive”. For her art is the release of creative energy, figuratively put in motion in a spatial, temporal and cultural dimension.
The concept of action is strongly anchored in Viennese art history. In the early 1960′s the Viennese “Aktion” artists declared traditional painting dead. The human body per se became the artistic medium.
In the making of Mildner’s paintings, it is her own energy that the skaters translate.
For me seeing these paintings full of both energy and emotion, brought back events of my own teenage angst. A mixed feeling of emotions are drawn to the surface the more you look into these works, the more you see reflections of life’s entanglements, with both sinister and fun twists and turns.
